A (Self) Love Letter From Our Healthy Communities Team

Practicing self-love this Valentine’s season can be simple. Through our LA Food Equity program, ActiveSGV hosts nutrition education classes that focus on realistic, supportive ways to improve health and show some love to our bodies. A lesson we teach and that we’d like to share is our discussion on weight and body size.

Three people gather around a table in a school kitchen, mixing and seasoning a large bowl of chopped vegetables, with paper flowers and a “Choose Kindness” sign on the wall.

In class, we talk about how a healthy weight and body size looks different for everyone. Each body has its own natural weight set point, shaped by many factors, including things outside our control. Our health is not defined by the number on a scale, and it’s important to remember, weight loss is not a guarantee of better health or happiness. In this Valentine’s season, remember that all bodies deserve to be treated with love, regardless of weight and size.

Instead of centering calories or strict rules, our classes explore the bigger picture of wellbeing. We talk about the importance of movement for our mind and body, the way food can affect mood and energy, how sleep and stress connect to appetite and wellbeing, how media messages shape body image, and how to build a healthier relationship with food and your body over time.

Our LAFEF classes are a place to learn, ask questions, and leave with tools that fit real life. We also prepare healthy recipes together that you can make at home, using simple ingredients and steps that work for busy days. Here is one of our favorites for Valentine’s season.
