Active Recap: June 2025

June served as a potent reminder of the San Gabriel Valley’s enduring strength. While we reflect on a month rich with local gatherings and shared moments, we also confront the profound fear and uncertainty stemming from ongoing ICE raids across Los Angeles County and right here in the San Gabriel Valley. Such actions disrupt the sense of security, hindering access to public spaces and the very community resources and events we endeavor to make accessible and welcoming to all. Still, against this backdrop, our resolve remains unwavering: to build a San Gabriel Valley that is safe, inclusive, and supportive of every person, regardless of their background or immigration status.

Healthy Cooking & Nutrition Series

We started a five-week hands-on cooking and nutrition series in partnership with CalFresh Healthy Living. Families came together to learn how to prepare simple, healthy meals, explore the basics of nutrition, and cook together in a supportive environment. A Public Health Nurse also joined us each week to answer questions and share resources about community health.

Rio Hondo Restoration Project Workshop

A group of people writing on colorful sticky notes and posting them on a community input board about the Rio Hondo Ecosystem Restoration Project, with mountains in the background.

Community members gathered for the Rio Hondo Ecosystem Restoration Project Community Workshop and bike ride. Together, we explored the vision for transforming Peck Road Water Conservation Park, which includes cleaning stormwater runoff, restoring native habitats, and creating safer, more accessible paths for walking and biking. Participants walked the corridor with the project team, asked questions, and offered ideas on what they would like to see in the space. It was an energizing and inspiring day for all. ActiveSGV’s Climate team concluded its work as part of the State of California’s Trusted Messenger Network, facilitated through the Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Communications (OCPSC). Over the past year, the team has connected with over 150,000 people through tabling, canvassing, workshops, and other initiatives, covering topics such as youth behavioral health, water conservation, and extreme heat preparedness. Whether it was distributing COVID tests or sharing the CA Community Resource Guide, our staff showed up for neighbors across the region. Thank you to OCPSC for the partnership and to everyone who engaged with us over the last two years.

Gardening Class & Crop Swap in Pomona

Three women pack fresh produce into bags at a shaded table during a food distribution event.

We joined Lopez Urban Farms and Garden, along with Yogi Juanita, for a special gardening class and crop swap. Attendees learned how to grow cucumbers, enjoyed a recipe demonstration featuring a fresh cucumber salad, and took home cucumber plants to grow their own. Events like these provide an opportunity to share knowledge, connect with others, and support local food access.

Slauson Park Pool Centennial Celebration

A bike safety course set up on a basketball court with orange cones, a stop sign, and ActiveSGV signage.

We went to Azusa to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Slauson Park Pool. In addition to a day filled with activities such as boxing, volleyball, basketball, and swimming, we also set up a bicycle rodeo and an educational zone. Our team organized a tire inflation contest, provided bike safety tips, and distributed bike lights to participants. It was wonderful to see so many young riders enjoying the course and gaining confidence on their bikes.

Mission-at-Twilight!

Thousands of people came together for Mission at Twilight, a family-friendly Open Streets event in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley. Attendees walked, biked, and rolled along Mission Drive to Mission Street, which was closed to vehicle traffic between South Pasadena and San Gabriel. The route featured three community hubs, each offering live music, art, cultural performances, and free activities.

Pride Outside E-Bike Demo

We celebrated Pride Outside at San Gabriel River Park, hosting a demo for electric family and cargo bikes. Participants test rode e-bikes, learned about bike safety and classifications, and enjoyed the shaded river path while exploring new mobility options.
