Intern Spotlight: Meet Jaylene Ortiz - El Monte Clean Mobility Nexus Communications and Outreach Intern

Meet Jaylene Ortiz, one of our communications and outreach interns for El Monte’s Clean Mobility Nexus program. Jaylene supports the program’s communications and outreach efforts, helping connect residents to clean transportation options in El Monte. Her work can look different from day to day, from helping people feel more comfortable on bikes to guiding residents through the e-bike sign-up process.

She lives in the San Gabriel Valley and graduated from Cal State LA with a degree in Organizational Communications. Since joining ActiveSGV, she has been able to connect her interest in community engagement with work that supports environmental justice and transportation access across the region. How did you get started working at ActiveSGV?

I first became interested in ActiveSGV because I had been following the organization’s work online and was inspired by its focus on environmental justice and community-based solutions. When I saw the opportunity to get involved with the Clean Mobility Nexus program, I knew it aligned with my background in communications and my desire to contribute to meaningful change in my own community.

What do you like most about working with ActiveSGV?

What I like most about working with ActiveSGV is the staff and their connection to the community. It’s motivating to be part of an organization that prioritizes equity and access and truly works to remove barriers for underserved communities.

Favorite and memorable ActiveSGV experience:

My most memorable experience with ActiveSGV so far has been our first Nexus community bike ride. We had a huge turnout, and the team worked together to make it a success. It was especially rewarding to see everyone finish all 14 miles strong, including people we had just taught to ride in the previous weeks.

If a friend from out of town were to visit, which place in the SGV would you take them to and why?

If I had a friend visiting from out of town, I would take them to Schabarum Skyline Trail near my house so we could get some steps in and catch up. After that, I’d take them to Vitacane for an acai bowl or a fresh juice, or both!

What are you currently listening to, reading, watching, or digging?

I recently finished the newest season of Bridgerton, and I’ve been loving to listen to Peso Plumas newest album Dinastía.
