At a special meeting on Thursday May 21st in the City of Monrovia, the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments' (SGVCOG) Transportation Committee will discuss and recommend funding allocations for yet-to-be-formally-proposed transportation sales tax measure for LA County, referred by some as Measure R2 (Measure R was the 2008 Transportation Measure Sales Tax that was approved by over 2/3rds of County voters and has funded the expansion of Metro rail lines across LA County as well as other major transportation projects).
Why should you care? Well for one, pedestrian, bike and safe routes to school projects have been historically under-funded in LA County (19% modal share, yet currently less than 1% of all transportation investments!). In contrast, other regions in California including Alameda and Santa Barbara counties have proposed and adopted robust set-asides for active transportation.
Such inequity in funding has helped fuel the call for a 10% set-aside for active transportation in any new sales tax measure, already supported by over three dozen environmental, social justice, youth, pedestrian and bicycle groups. The request has been championed by Investing In Place, LACBC and CA Walks, who recently sent a joint letter to the SGVCOG outlining why a significant commitment to active transportation is needed in our sub-region and the rest of the County.
