City to Formally Adopt Climate Action Plan that Calls for Bike-Friendly Infrastructure
On Wednesday, October 3, the City of Monterey Park City Council is set to formally adopt and implement its Climate Action Plan (CAP). The vote is required as part of the formal process for the adoption of city ordinances.
Work on the CAP began in 2008 and included public input that included opinions submitted by members of BikeSGV. The CAP will help the city reduce overall greenhouse gasses and go towards reducing the environmental impact of new construction and development within the city and surrounding areas. By adopting the CAP, the Council will be amending its Municipal Building Code to include a portion of the 2010 Green Building Standards Code with its amendments.
Of particular interest to the cycling community is the added requirement of bike parking and shower facilities for certain new constructions. Existing buildings must comply if there is a change in occupancy classification under the 2010 California Building Code.
Although the council unanimously approved the CAP at its first hearing, the cycling community, especially those who reside or ride in Monterey Park, are encouraged to attend the council meeting to voice their opinion in support of the CAP.
