Since 2001, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) has defended the rights of immigrant workers and low-wage workers. In Pasadena, NDLON runs the Pasadena Community Job Center (PCJC), located at the edge of the Eaton Fire zone. When the fires began, day laborers and immigrant families from the PCJC acted immediately. Even as high winds continued to spread flames and smoke, the Job Center became the heart of a major relief effort.
PCJC quickly formed day laborer-led Volunteer Fire Relief Brigades to provide support to impacted residents. Volunteers cleared away 3,150 tons of fire debris and fallen tree limbs, and delivered food, water, clothing, emergency supplies, masks, and other protective equipment to those in need. This effort reached more than 27,000 people and engaged over 10,000 volunteers in the first three weeks alone.
To help ensure worker safety, NDLON trainers administered a Disaster Site Safety Training to 175 workers. This OSHA authorized course covered the hazards of post-fire cleanup, workers’ rights, and health protections on the job. While the immediate emergency has passed, NDLON and PCJC remain committed to advocating for safe working conditions for cleanup and reconstruction workers and to supporting immigrant families and community members as they rebuild.
In addition to its work in disaster relief, NDLON has been a key support for immigrant families during ICE raids. During this time, NDLON has helped connect people with legal resources, informed them of their rights, and provided safe shelter and outreach. This work strengthens community resilience, especially for people who face fear and uncertainty in their daily lives.
Be part of the celebration as we honor NDLON and other local leaders at Noche de las Luminarias. This special evening will bring together advocates, organizations, public agencies, and city staff who are working every day to create healthier, safer, and more connected communities across the San Gabriel Valley.
