Nikki High is the founder and owner of Octavia’s Bookshelf in Pasadena, California. As an early reader, Nikki always found safety in books, and her love for reading and storytelling only grew over the years. Guided by this passion and a desire to create the kind of literary space she longed for as a child, Nikki opened Octavia’s Bookshelf on February 18, 2023.
Octavia’s Bookshelf offers a carefully curated selection of books across all genres written by BIPOC authors. Under Nikki’s leadership, it has become a gathering place for locals, authors, travelers, and readers of all backgrounds. The shop regularly hosts panels on topics ranging from Black maternal health to self-publishing, as well as festivals for comics, open mic nights, guided meditation, and other community events.
Octavia’s Bookshelf has always been more than a bookstore. It is a place of care, comfort, and connection, offering the community a safe space to gather. After the Eaton fires and continuing today, Nikki’s shop has remained a source of healing and support for the Dena community. Under her leadership, Octavia’s Bookshelf shows how local businesses care for and nurture the communities they serve.
Be part of the celebration as we honor Nikki and other local leaders at Noche de las Luminarias. This special evening will bring together advocates, organizations, public agencies, and city staff who are working every day to create healthier, safer, and more connected communities across the San Gabriel Valley.
