In partnership with the City of El Monte, ActiveSGV is excited to support the development of the Merced Avenue Linear Park, a transformative project designed to enhance green spaces and active transportation options in the community. This two-phase project, led by Alta, brings a combination of new bicycle facilities and a vibrant linear park to Merced Avenue.

Phase one focused on installing new bicycle facilities throughout El Monte and repairing existing roadways. These improvements helped enhance mobility and safety for cyclists across the city. Phase two, now complete, transformed Merced Avenue with a new linear park featuring a landscaped median, native plantings, shade trees, stormwater capture systems, and separated walking and biking paths. The park also includes lighting, seating, play areas, and space for future public art, providing residents with a safe and welcoming space for recreation and relaxation.

Key benefits of the Merced Avenue Linear Park include:

       •        Expanding access to green, open spaces for the community
       •        Creating safer streets with a traffic-calming landscaped median
       •        Providing a safe space for walking and biking, separate from vehicle traffic
       •        Strengthening community ties by offering more public gathering spaces
       •        Repurposing unused roadway into a space that benefits everyone
       •        Connecting to the Rio Hondo Bike Path in a future phase, improving regional bikeway access

ActiveSGV has supported this project through grant applications, public outreach, and providing input on final designs. A future phase, anticipated for 2024, will add a Class I bike path linking the linear park to the Rio Hondo Bike Path, creating a continuous network for active transportation in El Monte.

The ActiveSGV Rain Gardens Team invites you to volunteer with us! Together we’ll be transforming a community member's garden into a water-saving, habitat-rich ecosystem — and you’ll learn practical skills you can use at home. What you’ll learn: Our team will walk you through the sheet mulching process — an eco-friendly technique that removes lawns while improving soil health. You’ll see how it works and learn tips for handling different types of grass. You’ll also see how we shape the ground to create swales and capture precious rain, allowing the garden to thrive with minimal watering.
