Looking for a fun, hip and exciting thing to do this Saturday? Do you like supporting local small businesses and entrepreneurs?  Well, come on by to the Pasadena's 626 Night Market on Saturday, July 28, 2012 from 4pm-11:30pm.  Join us for mouth watering foods, home bred products from local businesses and an overall festive environment.

We encourage all folks to ditch their cars in exchange for a nice walk or bus/metro/bike ride.  Bike SGV will host a bike valet service directly across the street from Pasadena City Hall at Day One (175 N. Euclid Ave). The bike valet will feature secure bike parking in an enclosed park-like area, music, and bike mechanics sponsored by Performance Bicycle, Pasadena. Performance mechanics will be on hand from 4-8pm and able to help riders with the following, free of charge:
  • Brake adjustments
  • Derailleur adjustments
  • Tire pressure checks
  • Basic safety checks

In addition, Metro Rail service's new extended weekend hours will be kicking off this weekend, so trains will be running until 2am. Needless to say, event attendees will have plenty of options with over a hundred vendors lined up and plenty of other opportunities in nearby Old Pasadena to take advantage of. See you Saturday!

Get excited. The 18th Annual Pride of the Valley 5K Run/Walk/Bike is Saturday, August 4, 2012.
Bike SGV has partnered with the City of Baldwin Park to add a fun bike ride to this year's foot race.

Once a year the city safe guards a 3.1-mile route with barricades, signs and car detours to fully protect runners, joggers and walkers during this sanctioned race. This time around we're adding bicycles to the equation. The streets will be cleaned and completely free of obstacles making for a fun and safe bike ride in Baldwin Park.

We invite all families, friends and neighbors to join us as we bring new meaning to the Pride of the Valley 5k Run/Walk/Bike.  Please click on the image for additional information.  Registration will also be accepted at any Bike SGV pit stop, bike valet or booth in the San Gabriel Valley.

The bike ride is open to youth 8 years old and above. All participants under the age of 18 must wear a helmet. Be sure to look for the Bike SGV booth at Morgan Park.

7/17 - BikeSGV Partners with KPCC to Host "Weighing In: Addressing Youth Obesity in LA County" @ Crawford Family Forum!

Earlier this year Javier Hernandez of Bike SGV was selected by Kaiser Permanente and HBO Documentary Films to participate in the filming of "The Weight of the Nation."  Javier hauled both a camera-man and microphone operator on a custom built wagon as they captured the youth leaders of the Baldwin Park Cycler Program advocating for safer streets while learning about city planning, traffic calming, bicycle safety, rules of the road and basic mechanics.

While we did not make the final cut, the final product does an excellent job in shedding light on the scale of America's obesity problem and what communities and individuals can and are doing to begin addressing it. KPCC's Crawford Family Forum will screen a few segments from the part of the series entitled, "Children in Crisis", followed by a panel discussion.

From KPCC's website:

America’s obesity problem hits close to home: today, over half of LA County’s adult population is overweight or obese, a figure consistent with the growth trend seen between 1997 and 2007, when the percentage of the county’s residents – including children – jumped from 14% to 22%. Given health, economic, and other disparities within our region, obesity and its effects have afflicted some segments of our population more than others. Yet quality-of-life, workforce productivity, and health care costs have implications for the region as a whole.

On Tuesday, July 17th, KPCC’s Jose Martinez moderates “Weighing In: Addressing Youth Obesity in L.A. County” at The Crawford Family Forum. This child and teen obesity focused program will look at clips from the HBO/Institute of Medicine documentary series “Weight of the Nation” and take up the realities of dealing with obesity in and around Los Angeles.

Moderator:
Jose Martinez (KPCC OnCentral reporter)

Panelists:
Dr. Eric Walsh (Director, Pasadena Public Health Department)
Jackie Hernandez (Greater LA director, American Heart Association)
Carlos Morales (Founder, Eastside Bike Club)

6:30pm - Doors Open
7:00pm - Program

Admission is FREE, but online RSVPs via the KPCC website are required
