ACTIVE STREETS EL MONTE (AHA)
The Active Streets El Monte (American Heart Association) campaign aimed to build community and organizational capacity to create long-lasting, committed local funding for bicycle and pedestrian improvements in the City of El Monte via the adoption of an active transportation ‘set-aside’ of local transportation sales tax allocations.

ACTIVE STREETS AT WORK IN OUR COMMUNITY
The proposed campaign policy was to establish a Local Return ‘set-aside’ for Pedestrian and Bike projects from annual Measure M and R transportation sales tax dollars that the City of El Monte receives on an annual basis. Years of planning work in the community has underlined that reducing injury-causing and fatal traffic collisions involving people walking, biking, and using other forms of healthy, active transportation is a priority. ActiveSGV hosted Key-informant interviews with city council members, reviewed and analyzed the City budget and created High Injury Network (HIN) maps of pedestrian and bicycle crashes across the city.
The Active Streets El Monte campaign project conducted over 6 key informant interviews, 4 focus groups with high school students, senior citizens, and parents, led bike tours of city infrastructure and hosted 2 community events where HIN findings were shared. While the campaign is in its initial stages, we hope to secure future funding to achieve the adoption of an active transportation ‘set-aside’ of local transportation sales tax allocations. |
